Happy Birthday, Eiffel Tower!
Oh, the Eiffel Tower. La tour Eiffel. The Iron Lady. The most recognizable monument in Paris, my most favorite city in the world. When we planned a trip to Europe last month to celebrate our 10 year anniversary this year, of course I had to add a stop in the city of love. I’m lucky I’ve had the chance to visit three times before this trip, but I mean, if we’re going all the way over to Europe, I’m going to stop in Paris. And I’m going to see the Eiffel Tower as much as possible.
Since we had less than two days in Paris, I wanted to book a hotel with a view of my lady love. After a little Instagram research, I came across Hotel La Comtesse, a boutique hotel in the 7th arrondissement (central Paris is divided into districts called arrondissements) where all the rooms have Eiffel Tower views. Yes, please! Booked!
When we arrived on a beautiful spring afternoon, my face was stuck to the cab window, trying to catch a glimpse of her. We checked in to our hotel, went straight up to our tiny room and I flung open the doors to see la tour in all her glory! We then walked the very short distance to the Champ de Mars and grabbed a spot on the lawn. We bought a bought a bottle of rosé from one of the guys walking around selling overly priced wine to tourists like me and settled in for one of the best hours of the trip. The love of my life, the Eiffel Tower, rosé. Ahh take me back.
Super quick history: the tower was created by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World’s Fair. It was the tallest monument at the time and close to 6 million people go up the tower each year. 2019 marks 130 years of the Eiffel Tower standing tall above the Paris skyline. At night, the tower is illuminated and sparkles for 5 minutes every hour on the hour.
In addition to booking a hotel room near the Eiffel Tower and with a view of her, and making sure we saw her sparkle at night, I also booked a photographer to take our pictures near the Eiffel Tower. I know I’m ridiculous, but it’s our TEN YEAR anniversary and we were in my most favorite city. I was going to get pictures for the gram and pictures to keep forever. I found a wonderful photographer, Meiry Flanerie, thanks to Instagram, again. We met her just after sunrise near the Eiffel Tower where almost no other people were walking around and she captured some amazing photos I’ll cherish forever. My husband was such a good sport waking up early and being forced to be romantic in front of the camera.
Although I made sure we walked by the tower numerous times and I stood out on our little balcony to see her as much as I could (the hotel actually had to call our room to tell us we needed to check out), the view of the Eiffel Tower never gets old. I can’t wait until I see her again. Joyeux Anniversaire la tour Eiffel!
